I've been spending quite a bit of time with kids who are receiving chemotherapy. Did you know some of them aren't allowed to eat fresh berries? Many are on "low microbial diets" since they are so susceptible to infections. It means no foods that could have a significant bacteria/fungal load. Some foods are obvious (fast food that's been sitting under a warmer for a while), but some less so: berries! Apparently, berries can't really be washed well enough to be safe if you have like, no immune system.

With all the stuff I'm learning and experiencing with these kids, this is one of the facts I think about disproportionately often.
