three fingers

Today I learned that a normally functioning jaw should open wide enough for one's three fingers (not pinky, not thumb) to fit inside. I like it when one's body can be used to evaluate itself. Also, I'm grateful for functioning temporal mandibular joints. Really.

A few weeks ago, I asked a three-year-old how old she was. She very shyly held up three fingers, then, with a little gleam in her eye, a clearly planned joke, she held up a fourth, knowing it was funny.
